Feeding Tips

A high quality food is a crucial foundation for growth, good health, brilliant colouration and normal reproductive systems for aquarium fish. A single type of food will not meet the requirements of the fishes; you should give them a variety of foods, so they receive a wide range of different nutrients. It is very important that you know what kind of fish you have, because different kinds of fish need different kinds of feeding. Feeding the wrong food to your fish can cause malnutrition and digestive problems.

Community species
Generally fish are categorized as omnivores, carnivores or herbivores. Here you can find the different species and their feeding frequency.

Feeding Frequency
As a basic rule, fish should be fed once or twice a day with a quantity that they can fully consume in 3-5 minutes. If you want to make your fish grow faster, you should feed small servings several times a day (up to four) rather than one or two big meals.  One or two big meals also tend to add to the overfeeding (pollution) that causes most fish deaths

Main points

  • Don't over feed
  • Remove any uneaten food after a few minutes
  • Use a diet which is suitable for the species being kept
  • The younger fish need more proteins and frequent feeding than older fish.
